The Big Help Out is a nationwide weekend of volunteering and community action from Friday 7th – Sunday 9th June 2024. It aims to: raise awareness of the benefits of volunteering for individuals, communities and good causes; and provide opportunities for people to experience volunteering and make a difference in their community.

About Food Cycle

We are FoodCycle, and our vision is to make food poverty, loneliness and food waste a thing of the past for every community.

We connect communities, reducing loneliness and food poverty – working with thousands of volunteers and surplus food to help everyone who needs us. By creating welcoming spaces for people from all walks of life to meet, eat and have conversations, we are supporting people’s health and mental wellbeing.

By cooking with surplus ingredients, we promote healthy, sustainable attitudes towards food and its impact on the environment, and help people to learn more about healthy food.

Volunteering Opportunities

We need volunteers in Quinton, Kingstanding, West Heath, Erdington, Longbridge, Weoley Castle and Falcon Lodge for the following roles:

Hosts - as a Hosting Volunteer, you’ll support the team in creating a warm, welcoming environment. You’ll serve food, share a meal with our guests, encourage conversation and clean up afterwards.

Cooks - whether you’re a Masterchef winner in the making or a cooking novice you can roll your sleeves up, and join the kitchen team producing a three-course vegetarian meal using surplus food. You don’t need to have any previous cooking experience; you just need to get stuck in!

Pot washers - help our community dining spaces to run smoothly by volunteering to wash pots and clean up after the events.

In all these volunteering roles, you’ll be supported by a FoodCycle Project Leader, who will help you to develop your skills.
