The Medaille Trust’s Moving on Project in the West Midlands, want to take the opportunity to raise awareness of modern slavery, exploitation and trafficking for Anti-Slavery Day.

Modern Slavery can take many forms including:

• Labour exploitation                                    
• Sexual exploitation
• Domestic servitude
• Criminal exploitation
• Organ harvesting
• Child exploitation
• Debt bondage

What is the scale and demographics of this in the UK?

In the first quarter of 2021:

• 2945 survivors of modern slavery were referred to the Home Office.
• 75% were male and 25% female.
• 49% were for adults, 45% for children, 6% age unknown
• The most common nationalities were UK, Albanian and Vietnamese.

The Moving On Project supports adult female survivors of modern slavery, exploitation and trafficking at most stages of their journey as follows:

• We can support pre-National Referral Mechanism stage (NRM – This is the framework for identifying and referring potential survivors of modern slavery).
• We are first responders – so we are able to complete referrals into the NRM.
• Whilst the Woman is in the NRM process, they can attend any group sessions we are running.
• Once the decision has been reached, we can work with them regardless, whether it is a positive or negative conclusive grounds decision.
• For those who don’t know whether they want to enter the NRM at this time, we can also work with them too.

We support with:

• Casework and Befriending, Physical and Mental Wellbeing, Education, Employment and Volunteering, Community Activities, Independent Living and Access to Justice.
