West Midlands Multibank

Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region face some of the highest levels of child poverty in the country. In Birmingham alone, over 40% of children are living in poverty. Across the region, individuals and families are experiencing hardship, with increasing pressures from rising living costs, housing insecurity, and limited access to basic essentials. These challenges impact children’s health, wellbeing, and education, and prevent adults from building safe and stable lives for themselves and their families.

The West Midlands Multibank aims to support as many people as possible by redistributing surplus goods and donated items from businesses via a network of community-based partners across the region. We have begun working with a number of organisations across the voluntary and public sectors, and look forward to extending our reach to even more groups and communities. We also welcome partnerships with local businesses that may be able to donate useful items such as bedding, clothing, hygiene products, and household goods.

One million essential items have been distributed to families in need across the region through the West Midlands Multibank since the project was launched just over a year ago.

The milestone was celebrated by BVSC (Birmingham Voluntary Service Council), who oversee the West Midlands Multibank alongside funders Comic Relief and Sport Relief.

The West Midlands Multibank, one of six  across the UK,  receives donations from businesses such as Amazon to distribute to a network of over 200 community partners such as charities who then distribute them to families most in need.  Households have been supported over 280,000 times through the WM Multibank so far.

Donations include households goods (e.g. bedding and clothing), toys and hygiene products (e.g. toothpaste and soaps). The donations are new unsold surplus products that may have otherwise gone to landfill so avoids waste and supports our environment as well as helping those in need.

BBC Morning Live featured the West Midland Multibank this week shining a light on the everyday work of the Multibank Team and the numerous partners it supports.

Jasmyn Dixon from the Refugee and Migrant Centre said the WM Multibank has had a “massive impact” on the people they serve with children receiving books and toys and families baby baths, with this “meaning the difference between crisis and stability” .
