Free online course: Housing rights for migrant communities in private renting

The course will give you the basic knowledge and skills you need to deal with key housing issues faced by people from migrant communities in privately rented accommodation. It has been updated to include the key changes introduced by the Renters Rights Act, ensuring you understand the new rules around tenancies, disrepair, and evictions.

It focuses on housing rights for people with the right to rent - it does not cover challenges faced by people without regular immigration status.

You do not need to know anything about housing law to apply, as this introductory course is aimed at people with no formal legal training.

The course is aimed at frontline staff and volunteers from grassroots and community groups, charities, faith groups and health organisations who regularly support people from migrant communities. Due to funding requirements, we are unable to offer spaces to local authority staff, housing providers (including housing associations), estate agents, or organisations that charge a fee for frontline service provision. This workshop covers relevant law in England only.

You will be asked to watch a 30‑minute introductory video before each interactive workshop.

The workshops will all take place from 10am - 12.30pm on the following dates:

Tuesday 8th September Housing and benefits
Thursday 10th September Tenancies and other housing arrangements
Monday 14th September How to get repairs done in your privately rented home
Monday 21st September Dealing with section 8 eviction notices

It is important that you are able to attend all four workshops, as later sessions build on the knowledge from previous ones.

The course is free to attend, but spaces are limited. We will prioritise people from community or grassroots organisations who have not already attended one of our housing courses. Due to limited capacity, we can accept a maximum of two people per organisation.

The course will be delivered in English, and you can submit any accessibility needs in the registration form.

We ask each person who would like to attend to register separately, as this is important for our evaluation processes and to keep track of numbers.

Registration will close at 9am on Monday 31st August. However registration may close early if the course fills up, so we encourage you to register as early as possible to secure your place.

We will let you know by Tuesday 1st September if you have secured a place.
