We are looking for a volunteer craftsperson to support the woodcraft department with product crafting and helping service users to develop a range of skills.

Better Pathways has been supporting people with poor mental health and with learning disabilities and difficulties to volunteer on our therapeutic work programme since 1963. We have a dedicated, professional team working alongside our 100+ volunteers in a safe, supported space, growing their skills, confidence

Role Description

As a member of the team you will be supported by a workshop supervisor to provide support to a number of service users. You will plan and allocate projects to service users, motivating and providing them with the tools to upskill and gain confidence. You will support service users to develop a range of vocational and other skills, including personal, social, communication and life skills.

The ideal candidate should be familiar with basic machinery and will support service users when using tools and equipment such as saws and drills.

You will be required to liaise with workshop supervisors to provide them with progress updates and contribute to the assessments of service users at review meetings. and provide motivation and upskilling service users, assessing their progress along the way.

In return, Better Pathways will support you with managing health and safety and can offer mental health first aid training.

Criteria (E – Essential, D – Desirable)

  • Ability to volunteer flexible hours (Mon to Fri, 8 am – 3 pm) (E)
  • Carpentry/woodcraft experience – Minimum 2 years (E)
  • Experience of running and supervising a woodshop environment (D)
  • Experience of training individuals on machinery and processes (D)
  • Experience of working with people with poor mental health, learning disabilities and difficulties (D)
  • Capable of handling moderate physical activity
