Better Pathways

Mental Health Charity (201 – 206 Alcester Street, Digbeth, Birmingham, B12 0NQ)

Our charity provides vocational skills development opportunities to help participants with poor mental health and with learning difficulties get into paid employment, education, and training.

We run a charitable (social) enterprise providing fulfilment and signage services to commercial customers. We also have a woodcraft workshop on site. We are looking for workshop operatives with spare time who are looking to ‘give something back’ by providing vital capacity to our team. You will support our team to plan the workload on our ‘shop floor’ and will help our participants as they go about their daily tasks.

You will want to develop an understanding of the third/social enterprise sector and of what it takes to support people with complex needs, some of whom are in situations of vulnerability.

You will also enjoy doing actual fulfilment work one minute, guiding and supporting participants the next, and possibly doing both at the same time!

You will need to be fit and healthy because lifting and moving is required in this role.

Who we are?

Better Pathways has been supporting people with poor mental health and with learning difficulties to participate on our vocational pathways programme for 60 years. We have a dedicated, professional team working alongside our 80+ participants in a safe, supported space, growing their skills, confidence and self-esteem, giving them a sense of purpose and achievement and the chance to engage more fully in their communities.

We provide packing, assembly, light engineering and signage services to businesses in the West Midlands. We make woodcraft products and are currently developing our product range. We are a valued supply chain partner supporting upwards of 20 businesses to deliver high quality end products to their customers.

Role Description

As a valued member of our team, you will be responsible for assisting the team to unpack jobs, set out workstations, complete fulfilment work and work alongside participants to help them complete activities.

If you enjoy driving, then there may be opportunities to collect products from customer locations and return them. But we are recruiting dedicated drivers, and this is certainly not a requirement of this role.

You will work to a schedule and with the support of others in the team, to help set out jobs, assemble goods and products onto pallets, shrink wrap and sometimes load them on our van. You may at times be required to unload and load goods and manual handling training will be provided by us.

You will be required to lift heavy items in and out of the vehicle, hence the need for you to be physically fit and active. However, if lifting is not possible for you because of health needs, then we will be able to work around this.

Essential Criteria

You must be aged at least 21 be able to volunteer between the hours of 8am – 3pm, Mon to Fri. Flexible shifts will of course be arranged (if you wish to drive when opportunities arise, have a full, clean UK driving license which you have held for at least 2 years, comply at all times with the Highway Code, have experience of driving box van or similar sized vehicles (we will pay to add business use to your insurance)) have experience of working in a factory type environment have an understanding of what it takes to work with people with poor mental health, and with learning difficulties and other complex needs be flexible, adaptable and patient and have excellent organisational and customer service skills because you will be a role model for the participants on our programme
