What will you be doing?

We are looking for people who can demonstrate a strong commitment to Health Exchange’s mission of educating, motivating, and helping people make changes which enable them to live healthier lives.

We’re always open to being approached by people who might add value to our already vibrant and effective Board. It’s not necessary to have previous Board experience as support will be available to develop in the role; we exist to help people make changes which enable them to learn, and that means Trustees too!

We welcome applications from people from all walks of life, and we particularly welcome applications from people in Birmingham and the West Midlands as we understand the importance and value of a Board that reflects the diverse community in which, and with which, we work.

Core responsibilities and expectations

Be personally motivated by the work we do at Health Exchange with the time required to devote to the role.
Ensure that Health Exchange complies with its governing document (its Articles), charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in providing strategic direction to Health Exchange: setting overall policy; defining goals and setting targets; evaluating performance; and ensuring Health Exchange pursues its strategic objectives.

Manage Health Exchanges’ resources responsibly and contribute to ensuring the sustainability of the charity.
Act at all times in Health Exchange best interests and follow the standards for public life – selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

What are we looking for?
Essential Criteria - Person Specification

Able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively.
Sound judgement and ability to think corporately and strategically; ability to handle competing priorities and make informed decisions.
Leadership skills, able to build consensus whilst balancing the need for full debate acting as critical friend.
Well-connected in your professional field or / and community and willing to act as an advocate for Health Exchange.
A local connection to Birmingham and the West Midlands community is desirable
Specific Subject Knowledge and skills

We are particularly looking for Trustees that can demonstrate at least one of the following:

Health Experience - Experience in NHS or VCSE sector in the West Midlands including knowledge of Improving the population’s health, preventing illness, and tackling health inequalities.

Business Development - Commercial acumen and networks to seize opportunities for income generation and service growth.

Finance - Expertise in providing financial guidance, driving growth and sustainability - analysing reports, overseeing statements, and budgets.

Digital Strategy and cyber security - Experience of IT/digital strategy/AI transformation initiatives.

Community Engagement and Patient Experience - Community engagement and / or patient participation experience working with patients to improve their health outcomes.

Research and Impact Evaluation - Research and/or evaluation experience that demonstrates impact and supports evidence-informed decision-making.

Social Media and branding - Social media and/or marketing experience with branding, messaging and website development.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) - Experience in the development and implementation of EDI policies, procedures, and guidelines, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
