Trustee Vacancy

We are seeking potential Trustees to join our active and engaged Board.  

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the strategic direction of a successful charity.  Women’s Aid makes a leading contribution to shaping the response to violence against women across Birmingham and Solihull, and in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of women and children affected by gender-based abuse including domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, female genital mutilation and forced marriage. We believe that women and children have the right to live free from violence, abuse and fear.  We offer a range of services from accommodation to support in the community.

We are seeking to receive applications from those with experience and / or skills in Social Housing and Registered Provider sector, Homelessness, Asset Management and Health and Safety.

The duties of a Trustee are:

  • To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document (i.e. memorandum and articles of association), charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
  • To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees in giving strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
  • To ensure the financial stability of the organisation
  • To protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds
  • In addition to the above statutory duties, each Trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions.  In practice this can involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, and providing advice and guidance on new initiatives or on other issues in which the Trustee has special expertise.

  • A commitment to the organisation and its values
  • A willingness to devote necessary time and effort required for the role
  • An understanding of strategy and the importance of a strategic vision
  • The ability to exercise independent judgement
  • An ability to think creatively
  • A willingness to speak their mind
  • An appreciation of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

The Board of Trustees are individually and collectively responsible for the overall governance of the charity, including its financial health.

Board meetings are held in the evening four times a year at the head office in Birmingham. Some Trustees also sit on Audit and Finance Committee. The appointment is for an initial term of three years with an option of further re-appointment.

Applications are particularly welcome from women across the diverse community of Birmingham and Solihull; we encourage applications from women from Black and Minority Ethnic Groups, and younger women (generation X, millennials and post millennials all very welcome!), to enhance and strengthen the diversity of our Board.
