Birmingham Charity Meetup launched

Friday, 29 May, 2020

May saw the launch of a new Charity Meetup as the Birmingham group met, virtually, for the first time. The theme was Wellbeing in Uncertain Times and the aim was to create a welcoming, relaxed session for those working in the sector to come together and support each other.

Charity Meetup Founder and Birmingham co-host Dawn Newton, with new hosts Vicky Kangurs and Claire Colvine, chose the wellbeing theme to help anyone feeling isolated and uncertain about the future. Dawn said: “People working in the charity/NFP sector are facing unique issues. We want to create a group where people can connect, relate to, and sympathise with, the concerns they have and not feel alone.”

Participants heard from expert speakers Debby Clayton from Total Spectrum and Chris Golby from Lumien. Debby is a recruitment and HR professional, Slimming World consultant and life coach. She talked about her formula for lockdown success; fuelling your body through healthy eating and drinking, ensuring you get fresh air and exercise, and how best to structure your day to ensure you maintain a sense of normality and work/life balance.

Chris provides culture and wellbeing consultancy, workshops and training to help companies drive employee performance. He shared his tips for working remotely which included managing co-worker relationships, goal setting and asking for help if you need it.

Also on the agenda was a fun ice-breaker, where attendees were asked to think of one word which sums up their charity or organisation and create a piece of art around their word. The drawing judged as the most artistic won a round of applause and a free ticket to the next event!

The meeting finished with the group exploring topical subjects including what people find difficult about remote working, whether there is anything that is easier because of lockdown and how organisations’ fundraising plans have changed.

Charity Meetup was established in 2015 after Dawn identified a need for events where charity professionals could network and share skills. The Birmingham group builds on the success of the London and Aylesbury meetups where people working in the sector come together to network, share skills and build collaborations.

The next Birmingham Charity Meetup will take place on Tuesday 9 June and the theme will be Moving Forwards with Positivity. The event will be suitable for everyone working in the sector, with key takeaways aimed specifically at fundraisers. Participants will hear from Suman Manghra, a Mindset and Empowerment Coach, and Charlotte Schofield, Director of Fundraising at University Hospitals Birmingham Charity.
