Increase in the Real Living Wage:

Living Wage workers in the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise sector, as well as the public and private sectors, are set for a pay boost from Living Wage Employers as the cost of living rises.

The Living Wage Foundation announced on 22 September that the Real Living Wage would increase by 10.1%, the largest year-on-year rise. The Real Living Wage has increased to £10.90 in the UK (a £1 increase) (and £11.95 in London) (a 90p increase). The new rates are now worth almost £3000 more per year in the UK than the minimum wage (and almost £5000 more than in London).

Unlike the Government minimum wage (‘National Living Wage’ for over 23s - £9.50) the Real Living Wage is the only wage rate independently calculated based on rising living costs. A full-time worker earning the new, real Living Wage would earn £2,730 more than a worker earning the current government minimum (NLW), and £1,950 more than their current pay. Employers choose to pay the Real Living Wage on a voluntary basis.

Birmingham – A Living Wage City:

Over the past two years the Living Wage movement has continued to grow, with the number of Living Wage employers more than doubling across the country.

BVSC is a Living Wage Employer. Brian Carr, CEO, BVSC, said:

“BVSC are proud to be a Living Wage Employer. The Real Living Wage is good for workers and employers. With the rising cost of living and increased demand for support, it’s more important than ever to pay a Real Living Wage in the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise sector. I would urge all sector employers to sign up to be Living Wage Employers”.

BVSC has joined Barrow Cadbury Trust, a Living Wage Funder, Birmingham City Council and other partners across Birmingham City in a movement to make Birmingham a Living Wage City.
