The Kickstart Generalist Advisor will provide practical and emotional support to clients attending Narthex Foodbanks who may have experienced destitution, poverty, abuse, debt, loneliness or be facing other crises through advice, guidance and benefits support.

Narthex Sparkhill is a charity set up by St John’s Anglican Church in Sparkhill. The Heart of Narthex work is to meet the culturally diverse needs of our local communities, providing quality facilities that offer a place of welcome. Our work these past years has been crucial to many in the community as we are seen as a safe neutral space for adults & young people to visit.

We currently provide the following services to the community; Senior Citizen Lunch Club, Tea Dances, Ladies Friendship Café & seated exercise, One Stop Advice Shop, Generalist Advice & Guidance Money & Debt Advice, Refugee Resource Centre, Foodbank Tyesley, 6 Satellite foodbanks, Carers Support, Supporting Victims, Parish Nurse Support.

Narthex are looking for a young person aged between 16 - 24yrs claiming Universal Credit to fill a Kickstart position. You need to be passionate about making a difference to people in need and will work with our current Money, Advice and guidance staff working on other Narthex Projects. You will work to build and provide a safe welcoming environment to help people at our Sparkhill & Tyseley Centres and provide generalist support to other staff for housing problems and general advice.

You will contribute to the smooth running of the Advice & Guidance Hub, and work with an experienced advisor & learning how to offer advice to clients with pre booked appointments and drop-in appointments developing your customer service skills. You will conduct follow up work, letters, submissions, courses and applications etc. The advice team will assist you with assessing your progress and knowledge gained.

You will also get the opportunity to write a report at the end of your 6 month placement to be part of your work profile when looking for work going forward.

You will also receive Employability Training as part of our commitment to the Kickstart scheme, helping young people secure long term employment. Narthex will also provide the successful candidate to gain their Level 2 in Generalist Advice & Guidance.

The person appointed will be employed by Birmingham Voluntary Services (BVSC) and seconded toNarthex in Sparkhill for the duration of their placement. The post is fixed term for 6 months.
