We are looking for Independent Visitors in West Midlands and Birmingham surrounding area to work with Children aged between 5 and 18 years who are in Care. This vital work will see you mentor these young people, building long-term friendships that help them to access hobbies and build life skills.


To visit, advise and befriend a young person who is in residential care or in a foster home, secure accommodation, or a young offenders’ institution.

To enable a young person to have contact with someone who is independent of the Social Services Department, education system and health department.

To provide an “adult friend” for a young person who has little or no contact with members of his/her own family.

To visit the child or young person on a regular basis over a two-year period (minimum), developing a relationship as an adult friend that primarily is a social one.

To encourage a young person to fulfil their potential by participating in activities as appropriate and agreeable that help to promote their social, emotional and educational development.
To ensure that the young person’s views and wishes are being heard and considered, recognising that, being young (and in care), they are more likely than adults to have their basic human rights forgotten or ignored.
To encourage children and young people to exercise their rights and to participate in decisions that will affect them.
To be aware of and seek to promote any needs specifically related to the young person’s race, culture, language, religion, disability, gender or sexual orientation and to challenge discrimination.
To keep in touch with others who have a responsibility for the young person as necessary.
To respect confidentiality, provided that in doing so, the young person’s welfare is not at risk.
To keep basic records of visits and other significant events as appropriate
