Organisation aims / mission / values

We are the London Independent Visitors Scheme, a project run by Action for Children. We work with Looked-After Children in London and those place our of London.

An Independent Visitor (IV) is an adult who has decided to volunteer to spend time with a child or young person in care, to befriend him or her, and to take part in the kinds of activities that the young person enjoys. IVs visit their young person once a month to do activities together and remain in touch with them in between visits.

The aim of the IV is to build a trusting and positive relationship with a looked after young person by taking an interest in them, providing additional support as well as developing their interests and hobbies.

Full training is provided, ongoing support by IV coordinators, Expenses reimbursed, subject to clear enhanced DBS check and references.

How we deliver these aims

We pride ourselves in providing IVs with excellent training and ongoing support by dedicated coordinators. This way, IVs are able to make a huge difference in the life of young people in care. Our young people and IVs are often matched for several years so that they can develop a trusting and positive relationship over time. One of our most successful pair has been matched for 8 years. The IV in question has seen and enabled the young person to grow and flourish!
