A free online half-day training course to raise awareness among professionals working in the field of domestic abuse in Birmingham of domestic abuse in LGBTQ+ relationships.

LGBTQ+ Domestic Abuse Awareness Training

Birmingham LGBT has been commissioned by Birmingham City Council to deliver four half-days of LGBTQ+ domestic abuse awareness training.

Aim
To raise awareness among professionals working in the field of domestic abuse in Birmingham of domestic abuse in LGBTQ+ relationships.

Learning objectives
At the end of the session participants will have:
• understood the concepts of homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and heterosexism and how they impact on domestic abuse in LGBTQ+ relationships;
• explored terminology and inclusive language;
• understood the prevalence of domestic abuse in same-sex relationships;
• explored the dynamics of an abusive relationship as it relates to same-sex couples and identified LGBTQ+-specific tactics of power and control;
• understood the additional barriers faced by LGBTQ+ victims of domestic abuse;
• explored risk assessment and risk management as it relates to LGBTQ+ victims of domestic abuse;
• been introduced to the Same-Sex Power and Control Wheel.

Trainer
Tina Wathern is an experienced freelance trainer and consultant working with organisations to provide training and consultancy on various LGBTQ-related topics. Tina was previously the Director of Education and Engagement for Stonewall Housing for 11 years. She had responsibility for Stonewall Housing’s national work, including facilitating national LGBTQ projects, writing about LGBTQ housing for various publications and academic journals, and co-ordinating Stonewall Housing’s networks. Tina was also the lead trainer for Stonewall Housing and is the creator of Stonewall Housing’s Inclusion standard. Before working in the LGBTQ+ sector, Tina’s background was in Domestic Abuse services.
