Reasearch into HMCTS

Defendant engagement research – information for external organisations

Revolving Doors Agency has been commissioned to carry out research with people that have had recent experience of the courts process for the first time. We are trying to understand and improve the engagement of first-time defendants across the whole process, from point of arrest through the first trial. We are looking for first-time defendants aged over 18 from across England and Wales and with a wide range of courts experience, including of video remand hearings, and of either representing themselves or who have had the support of a legal representative.

We are looking to arrange one-to-one interviews over the next few weeks, either over the phone or through a video call (e.g. by Zoom/Skype), depending on preference. The interview will last approximately 40 minutes, and interviewees can take breaks if needed. All interviews are confidential.

Who we are looking for:

First-time defendants with recent experience of the courts process in England or Wales. This includes first-time defendants who have:

Represented themselves in court OR

Been represented by someone else in court OR

Experience of a video-remand hearing

Please note: Anyone with an active case with HMCTS, or who is aged under 18, will NOT be able to take part.

If you are interested in taking part through a phone or video interview, or if you work with anyone who might be interested in taking part, then please contact our Research Manager Phil Mullen: philip.mullen[at][dot]uk
