The MIX is a community cafe with the purpose of bringing people together through the sharing of cooking and cultures. Based at The Old Prints Works in Balsall Heath, we offer affordable and nourishing food from a regularly changing menu, with recipes inspired by and collected from members of the local community. We run a varied cultural programme for all ages, creating opportunities to participate in meaningful exchanges and build lasting relationships. All proceeds go towards sustaining The GAP Arts Project, a charity that creates time and space for young people to make sense of the world through creative and cultural action. The MIX is currently run on a voluntary basis by The GAP's core team and a bunch of wonderful volunteers.

We are always looking for new volunteers to lend us a hand! This will mostly involve the day-to-day running of the cafe, but could also include other things such as marketing and event programming (if you have the relevant skills to offer).

What we are looking for:

  • You must be friendly and helpful, and happy to interact will all different types of people
  • People who are conscientious, responsible and willing to share their ideas for how we can improve our work as a team
  • No previous skills or experience are required, but it would be a bonus if you do have previous experience in front of house, customer service or cafe/restaurant/bar work
  • Aged 18+
  • Availability - Our general opening times are 11 am - 5 pm Tuesday - Saturday. We can chat about what days and times work best for you, and how regularly you'd like to volunteer (eg. weekly, fortnightly, monthly, etc). We sometimes host evening events too where we might need help running a bar or setting up
  • We are especially interested in hearing from people who live in or around Balsall Heath or have some other connection to the area

What we can offer:

  • Skills and experience in general cafe-running, including customer service, tilling, food preparation, etc
  • Barista coffee training
  • Free drinks and free lunch-time meal during your shift
  • Regular get-togethers for volunteers where we share food and fun activities
  • Be the first to hear about our exciting programme of cultural and community events
  • The opportunity to contribute your own ideas to the running of the cafe, e.g. suggesting and cooking recipes or running your own event

We hope to hear from you soon :)
