Birmingham Literature Festival Volunteer
The Birmingham Literature Festival
With 56 events over 11 days, this year is our biggest yet, with a diverse range in events, topics and writers. Our line up includes UK Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, outgoing Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq, and writer and activist, Billy Brag, to name just a few! We will also be joined this year by Guest Curator Stuart Maconie. Check out our website to see the whole programme.
What does it entail?
The Festival couldn't happen without the wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to help deliver our fantastic festival. In advance of October, you will be invited to a volunteer induction evening at our offices in Birmingham on Tuesday 17th September 2019 to find out more about the programme and what is involved in volunteering at the festival.
As a volunteer, you will be working alongside staff to make the festival happen. The role is varied, and below is a list of the main jobs you can expect:
- Supporting the get in and get out at venues, including lifting and carrying boxes and setting up equipment
- Greeting and welcoming audiences and writers
- Distributing partner's marketing material
- Managing audience Q&A for events
- Feedback forms
- Circulating mailing lists
Past Volunteer, Nelly shares her own experience volunteering with us:
"At BLF I had a warm welcome and, like everyone else, met wonderful volunteers coming together around their passion for literature. The job was mostly welcoming people, giving directions, and say “Yes, they are really here!” about authors. One shift, I ended up kayaking with Hannah (another volunteer and talented poet)... Most of the time I sat in on things, like when Joe Lycett and Jess Philips chatted away in Town Hall. And there are always snacks!"
