Rethink Mental Illness are looking for volunteers from a range of backgrounds to support our mental health advisors. With your support, we will be able to make a difference to more people who are affected by mental illness.

What do we do?

We give practical advice and information to our clients. Our team receive phone calls, e-mails, webchats and letters from people with mental illness, their families, employers and professionals.

What do we want from you?

We want you to be able to give simple advice or information to our clients. You will use a computer to record information.

You will be trained and supported by staff in our small and friendly office environment. You will begin your experience by giving advice by e-mail, webchat and letter. If you feel comfortable, and want to, we may be able to support you to give advice by telephone.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for people who are committed, reliable, honest and able to communicate well with people from different backgrounds and our staff. Ideally, you will be able to use a computer. Maybe you:

  • Have lived experience of mental illness?
  • Care for someone with a mental illness?
  • Are gaining experience for employment?
  • Need a placement for a healthcare qualification?
  • Are a retired health professional?
  • Want to make a difference to the lives of people with mental illness

What can we do for you?

We will do our best to support you in any way that we can. This will, of course, depend on what you want to achieve from volunteering. For example, we may be able to provide you with a reference or training certificates.

What are the time commitments?

Our service is open from 9 am – 5 pm Monday to Friday. You will volunteer within this time.

There are no set hours that we expect you to do. You can give as much or as little of your time as you are able to. ideally, we would like people to commit at least 4 hours per week.

Do we pay expenses?

You will be reimbursed for travel and lunch in line with our expenses policy

Where is it based?

You will be based in our office in Small Heath in Birmingham. A short 5-minute walk from Small Heath train station. There is free street parking. We also have storage for push bikes.
