At this year’s FareShare Volunteer Awards ‘Team Nechells’ from FareShare Midlands have won the award for Regional Centre Team of the Year and the Bright Idea award.

The judges were overwhelmed by the love and support given to this year’s Regional Centre Team of the Year by its nominees. Each nomination spoke of the team’s passion, commitment and respect for each other and FareShare as a whole. ‘Team Nechells’ are made up of a diverse range of volunteers from different backgrounds and abilities and support each other every step of the way. Like all of FareShare’s regional teams, they have worked consistently hard throughout the last year.

Winner of the Bright Idea award volunteer Keith Faraday said of the team: “We have over 60 regular volunteers in Birmingham who turn up for their shifts day in and day out - even through the COVID-19 pandemic. We all get on great together even though we have different lifestyles and skill sets. We love FareShare and the fantastic environment that is provided at Birmingham. Our team stick together and help each other, not just about work but in our personal lives too. We have all become a big family that plays to its strengths.”

Having demonstrated flexibility and conscientiousness over the pandemic, the team has valued their buddy system to bring out the best abilities of each volunteer. One of the newest volunteers said of the team “We all work hard but we have fun at the same time. We get to know about each other so that we can relate to each other, I love being part of the team”.

The ceremony took place virtually and was hosted by FareShare’s Commercial Director Alyson Walsh who said “Words can’t express how much volunteers have helped us during COVID-19. We’re incredibly grateful for the support of all our volunteers. We hope they find their experience rewarding and know their hard work helps local people whilst saving food from waste. It would be impossible to carry out our vital work without the dedication of our volunteers. We are always looking for new people to join us. If you can spare a couple of hours, we would love to hear from you.”
