Advice and Guidance Volunteer Location: Birmingham/RemoteTime: 4-8 hours per month (2-4 sessions)Breaking Barriers is a small charity whose mission is that every refugee can fulfil their potential and integrate into the UK through finding meaningful employment that matches their skills and experience. We do this by offering our refugee clients employment advice and guidance, English classes, and IT and Numeracy classes. We are currently based in London but are planning to expand into Manchester and Birmingham and expecting a mid-November start. We are recruiting for Advice and Guidance volunteers to help our refugee clients to achieve their career aspirations by completing 1:1 employment support sessions. The role is varied, and support is tailored to each client: some clients may have never been employed before, some want to go to university, and others may be experienced professionals such as doctors, teachers or lawyers. Activities include: • Supporting clients to write and format CVs and cover letters • Helping clients prepare for interviews, and leading mock interviews • Searching and applying for jobs in a range of fields • Supporting clients to improve their English writing and speaking skills • Contributing towards the monitoring and evaluation of client progress and development • Understand and adhere to Safeguarding Policy and GDPR policyIs this the right volunteer role for me? Our volunteers come from a wide range of sectors and backgrounds. This challenging volunteer role may suit you if you have the skills or experience listed below: Skills and experience:• Previous UK work experience and sector-specific knowledge of the UK job market. • Excellent communication skills, including fluent/native level of English • Confident with MS Word, online job searches and email • Beneficial: other language skills (including Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Tigrinya, Amharic, Somali, Pashto, Tamil etc) Attitude and soft skills:• Able to act with compassion and adapt your approach to suit clients at various points in their journey to employment • Reliable and flexible • Possess initiative and problem-solving skills Practical considerations:• Volunteers must provide two references • Volunteers must be able to bring their own laptops to appointments. • Training and support are provided for this role. This includes a volunteer induction and shadowing appointments with experienced volunteers or staff.
