Jewish Culture in the UK is being celebrated in an inaugural month-long event – aimed at people of all faiths and backgrounds – anyone who would like to experience the joy of Jewish culture.

Three events at city centre locations are taking place in Birmingham between Sunday, June 7 and Sunday, June 14 inclusive.

Online Tour of Art of Jewish Interest in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
Sunday 7th June, 11am

An online tour of Jewish Art found in Birmingham’s Museum and Art Gallery led by Dr Maddie Lewiston, an art historian at the University of Birmingham who specialises in 19th century British art. Her Leverhulme fellowship project, titled ‘The First Covenant: understanding the role of the Hebrew Bible in Victorian art’ offers the first sustained analysis of the role the Old Testament played in British visual culture. The online guided tour lasts one hour (11am to 12 noon).

Blessed Hands: Cooking Up a Show With My Turkish Jewish Granny
Thursday 11th June, 7pm

Dr Michal Nahman presents an evening of theatre, vegan cooking and personal narrative, with traditions of her Turkish Jewish family. This will be a one-hour performance followed by a Sephardi inspired vegan meal. The event runs from 7pm to 9.30pm.

An Evening of Jewish Music
Sunday 14th June, 7.30pm

An Evening of Jewish Music featuring Second City Virtuosi, CBSO past masters & rising stars, who will perform The Dreams & Prayers of Isaac the Blind by Jewish Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov.   The community’s own Kol Kinor Choir will sing from their repertoire of Jewish liturgical and secular music and Ora Solomons, a Masters student at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, will perform Jewish Songs by Jewish composer Mieczysław Weinberg. The event runs from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Jewish Culture Month is a national project of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the representative body of the UK Jewish community.
