Menopause Support in and out of the Workplace

Menopause Support in and out of the Workplace is a new government funded Project which will help people with menopausal health issues to remain in or return to the workforce.

BVSC has formed a partnership with DRC (Disability Resource Centre) and Salus Fatigue Foundation to provide free support to the citizens of Birmingham and Solihull by engaging with both individuals in the community, and small or medium sized enterprise employers.

Community workshops, organisational policy guidance, training for workplace champions and community volunteers, quarterly events with key note speakers are being planned to cover a wide range of menopause topics.

These webpages will be updated with news, events, and resources as the Project develops over the next two years.

Survey – we are compiling a baseline survey to find out what the citizens of Birmingham know about peri- and post- menopause – please help us find out what you know and share it with the Department of Health and the NHS

This event fills a gap in the market. These are questions we have been asked by male managers:

"A person who says they are menopausal keeps being really moody and it is affecting other staff, what can I do?"

"One of our male employees seems really distracted and work, he says his wife is menopausal, what can I do to support him?"

"‘Should I tell the team if someone is menopausal to help them be more understanding?"

"A female member of staff keeps making mistakes and forgetting things blaming it on menopause, it is impacting our customers what can I do?"

If these or similar questions have come up in your workplace come along to our Event to find out how we can help:

  • We will provide information and guidance to help men navigate their own andropause as well as support their menopausal colleagues in the workplace.
  • We will provide a space in which men can gather together to dispell myths and taboos about both andropause and menopause, where they can share their own experiences or gaps in knowledge and ask any question.

If you live, or work in Birmingham, Solihull or Warwickshire and work in a business with less than 250 employees* we'd like to help increase your knowledge and awareness in a friendly, open environment.

There will be two presentations from expert guest speakers, each followed by time for questions:

  • An employment law trainer from Worknest who will explain and demonstrate legal approaches to andropause and menopause in the workplace.
  • A menopause awareness campaigner – Aline Boblin, Menopause Knowledge CIC who will give insight into the similarities and differences between andropause and menopause; and provide holistic strategies and evidence based options to manage symptoms.

Finally, we will share information about the FREE services DRC offer to workplaces around policies, and training workplace Menopause Champions.

After the event there will be a networking opportunities over a nutritious lunch between 12 noon and 1pm.

This session is organised by DRC (Disability Resource Centre) and BVSC (Birmingham Voluntary Service Council), as part of the ‘Menopause in and out of the Workplace’ Project. It is funded through the government and so the engagement will be used to influence and inform policy, and create future change in menopausal health support across Birmingham, Solihull and Warwickshire, and ultimately affect national support.

The Project is funded until 2025 to specifically support Small and Medium Sized Enterprises by The Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Health and Wellbeing Fund - a joint initiative run by the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England and the UK Health Security Agency. The theme of the fund for 2022 to 2025 is women’s reproductive wellbeing in the workplace and links in with the development of the new Women’s Health Strategy.
